JAN ADRIAANS
LES EDITIONS PEEPING TOM

A monographic publication
by Dutch photographer and visual artist, Jan Adriaans

Jan Adriaans is a photographer and visual artist working with photography, installation and video. His body of work thoroughly and methodically investigates materials and space. A subsequent and representative gesture in his practice consists of undertaking an intervention in a given space (public or private) by adding, removing and/or shifting some detail of the décor, before recording the ephemeral installation with a photograph or a video. Confronted with images shot without a prior mise-en-scène by the artist, the modified sets create a subtle décalage and/or awkwardness, an intangible confusion, a certain awareness and consequently, a different perception or interpretation. His artworks also interrogate the social connotation and value of materials through their decadence and elevation to a higher status. Assigning human qualities to textures, components and deserted décors, Jan Adriaans plays with the idea of fetishism and its relationship to physicality.

This monograph contains three booklets:

- Ultrabright, Close to Being Deaf is a retrospective booklet compiling works by Jan Adriaans realized between 2005 and 2011, including a text by Annemartine van Kesteren, curator at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam, NL).

- Talisman is an exhibition on paper curated by Jan Adriaans, presenting a selection of works by his friends and artists he admires. Featuring: Tonio de Roover, Simon Kentgens, Jesse Nortier, Milou van Ham, Babette Kleijn, Regan Gentry, and Wineke Gartz. These artworks were collected thematically by Adriaans as ornaments and amulets.

- The Ideal Cut is an artist's book using this medium as an installation in the vein of a space intervention by Jan Adriaans. It presents a body of work encompassing a diamond as its motif and its impossibility of perfection.
